MALACAÑANG already confirmed the attendance of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the apex of Kagay-an Festival next Monday, making her the first sitting Chief Executive to grace the local event.

Councilor Jose Benjamin Benaldo, Kagay-an Festival chairman, issued the statement in Tuesday's City Council regular session.

Although the live staging of popular game-show "Wowowee" was scrapped on the last minute due to security concerns, Benaldo said this will be replaced by a star-studded variety show on the 28th.

Comedian Willy Revillame will still host the show, to be broadcasted live in ABS-CBN's "The Filipino Channel," he said.

In view of President Arroyo's visit, the City Council immediately tackled security matters, passing an ordinance requesting the Cagayan de Oro-based Army's Fourth Infantry Division to deploy more personnel on the occasion.

This is on top of the augmentation force already committed by the Regional Police Office-Northern Mindanao.

Major Samuel Sagun, 4ID public affairs officer, said they will provide "outer-layer" security such as installing additional checkpoints and more visibility in the downtown.
Amid some reports in the media on purported terrorist plots, Sagun said their intelligence arm has not yet received similar reports.

"But we are active in collecting information to detect any threat so that it can be contained immediately," he added.

Sagun also appealed to the public to report suspicious persons in their area, saying cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the civilian populace "remains the most effective weapon in combating terrorism."

City Director Aurelio Trampe earlier assured the readiness of city police in protecting fiesta revelers, a good number of them foreign tourists and balikbayans.

Benaldo expected some 300,000 people in the Revillame-hosted variety show alone.
